Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Journal Club: A systems biology approach to identify insecticide resistance markers in two mosquito species
Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Network (MalariaGEN) is inviting registrations for the Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Journal Club on “A systems biology approach to identify insecticide resistance markers in two mosquito species”.
Date: June 18, 2024
Time: 1:30pm (UK time, BST)
Speaker
- Cynthia Awuor is a researcher and Masters student (Msc Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics) at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Center for Global Health, Entomology Department).
- Through her work with the Genomics of African Vectors for NMCP Management of Insecticide Resistance (G-AVENIR) project, she is part of a team using whole genome data to support the identification of insecticide resistance markers in malaria vectors for public health decision-making within National Malaria Control Programs (NMCPs) in Benin and Kenya.
- Cynthia will discuss findings in a recent first-author pre-print which uses a systems biology approach to identify insecticide resistance markers in two mosquito species (https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-3856384/v1). Using a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) method, the team identified insecticide-resistant markers in Anopheles gambiae and arabiensis, revealing new insights into the molecular mechanisms of underlying resistance.
