Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia Call for Applications: Infectious Diseases and Public Health Field School

The Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) is inviting applications for the “Infectious Diseases and Public Health Field School“. This program is designed for students and researchers interested in gaining hands-on experience in exploring the transmission dynamics and public health impact of infectious diseases within the unique context of the Peruvian Amazon.

Date: July 15 to 24, 2024 (10 days)

Place: Lima and Iquitos, Peru

Objectives:

  • Explore infectious diseases in the Peruvian Amazon.
  • Understand transmission dynamics and public health impact of infectious diseases.
  • Learn practical skills for data collection, sample processing, and analysis.

Program components:

  • Lectures:
    • Classroom sessions led by experts in infectious diseases.
    • Topics: epidemiology, disease vectors, preventive measures.
  • Laboratory workshops:
    • Hands-on experience in small groups in fully equipped laboratories.
    • Techniques for handling and processing biological samples,
    • conducting assays, and interpreting results (data analysis).
  • Field work:
    • Collaboration with community workers and researchers.
    • Data collection, observation of healthcare practices.
    • Participation in ongoing research projects.

Target audience:

  • Students (under or postgraduate) and researchers passionate about infectious diseases.
  • Those seeking an Amazon-specific context for their studies.

Program Fee:

  • Basic fee of $1200.00 USD;
    • Includes – Transportation in the city of Iquitos; transportation to the Amazon community for field work; meals during the field work; ticket fee to Amazon Rescue Center (CREA, in Spanish); attendance certificate by Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
    • Does not include – Flight tickets (international and Lima-Iquitos-Lima); housing; meals in Iquitos and Lima; transportation in Lima.
  • Upgrade fee of $2500.00 USD;
    • Includes – Same as Basic fee; round-trip flight tickets between Lima and Iquitos; housing in Iquitos (fully furnished 1–2-bedroom apartments); meals in Iquitos, attendance certificate by Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
    • Does not include – International flight tickets; meals, housing and transportation in Lima.
