Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE): Disease Elimination & Eradication Course (DEEC)

In 2024, GLIDE will launch an updated iteration of DEEC in collaboration with The Carter CenterNoguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Ghana, and the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Rwanda. To accommodate growing interest and increase accessibility, the course will be held at both the UGHE and NMIMR campuses.

Course Description:

Throughout the course, participants will delve into the fundamental principles of disease elimination and eradication. Collaboratively and in-country teams, participants will develop strategies tailored to specific country contexts.

Course Objectives:

  • Enhance Course participants’ understanding of the core principles of disease elimination and eradication.
  • Develop strategies for the elimination and eradication of infectious diseases, particularly NTDs, polio, and malaria, through the analysis of challenges and lessons learned. 

Eligibility:

  • Minimum 2-3 people per country.
  • Represent the following:
    Disease program managers (NTDs, malaria or polio) or other Ministry of Health staff Public health professionals from NGOs (could include UN Agencies, National governments, Faith-based organizations, Private for-profit organizations)
    Academia – inclusion of young researchers focused on integration.
  • Be engaged in, or are interested in, building skills and competencies for infectious disease elimination and eradication strategy development, with focus on NTDs, malaria, and polio.

Scholarship Support:

  • The course fees can be covered including housing and travel costs for a selected number of professional applicants based on merit and need.
  • Other organizations are encouraged to provide financial support to public health professionals. 

Course dates:

Online portion:

  • May 6 – July 6, 2024, for both courses (Ghana and Rwanda).

In-person portion: 

  • UGHE campus, Rwanda from June 3 – 11, 2024
  • NMIMR campus, Ghana from June 24 – July 2, 2024
