Jhpiego Call for Applications: HIV, TB and Malaria reporting fellowship for journalists in Kenya
Jhpiego offers a two-day training and fellowship afterwards called HIV, TB and Malaria reporting fellowship for journalists in Kenya.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating effects on every aspect of health service, but services for infectious diseases such as Tuberculosis, HIV and Malaria have been disproportionately affected. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Tuberculosis Report in 2021 reported that case notifications for TB declined significantly, so much that it was the first time in history that TB mortality increased. The global health body also recorded similar reports for HIV and Malaria.
Three years after the first case was recorded in Kenya and the public back to their pre-pandemic ways, the ministry of health and other health experts have launched campaigns for the public to go back to health facilities to seek care. In addition, all 47 counties are investing money to re-strengthen health systems so that the public gets health services when they visit the facilities. The media influences how the public responds to such public health issues because it sets agendas by guiding the public on what they should be concerned with and how they should think about those matters. However, several challenges stand between reporters and executing this role, such as time pressure and the e and inability to interpret medical research.
With support from USAID, the Ministry of Health’s Division of National Malaria Program (DNMP), The National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC), and the Division of Health Promotion invite journalists from all over Kenya for a two-day training from February 27 2023, to March 3, 2023, and fellowship afterwards on reporting on the after-effects of the pandemic on the three diseases (HIV, TB and Malaria).
The reporters will get skills and support to:
- Report accurately on the basic science and terminology of the diseases.
- Know how the health system is affected by pandemics such as COVID-19 – and others.
- Knowledge of using data to report on diseases
- Contacts from the ministry of health knowledgeable on the three diseases.
