ITM Call for Applications: Applied Epidemiology Course

The Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp (ITM) is receiving applications for a short course in Applied Epidemiology. This module is a hands-on practical introduction to epidemiological modelling, including simulation modelling. It is entirely taught face to face at ITM from the 27th of March to the 14th of April, 2023. If you are not allowed to travel, there will also be a possibility to follow the course online.

Content:

  1. Import risk assessment.
  2. Multi-Diagnostic test evaluation in a Bayesian framework.
  3. Differential equation based transmission dynamic modelling.

Eligibility:

*If you are an MScGOH student, you first have to follow the ‘Basic’ and ‘Advanced Epidemiology’ modules. A mark of 60% in the ‘Advanced Epidemiology’ module is required, before you can start with this one.

*If you are not an MScGOH student:

  • You need strong experience in: “Data analysis in R”, “Basic statistics (hypothesis testing, significance)” and “Concepts of diagnostic tool performance (sensitivity, specificity)”
  • Proficiency in the course language (English). If your university studies were done in English: you are exempted of a language certificate. If this is not the case: an officially recognised proficiency language certificate is mandatory.

Learning Objectives:

  • Carry out a quantitative risk analysis including uncertainty analysis.
  • Understand Bayesian inference.
  • Evaluate multiple diagnostic tests.
  • Translate available data and expert opinions into probability distributions.
  • Perform simulation modelling of disease transmission processes.

Course Fee:

  • EEA – 644€
  • Non-EEA – 1288€
  • DGD Scholarship available (here)
