European Research Council Call for Applications: 2023 Grants

The past two years have seen the European Research Council (ERC) grant programme follow an untypical schedule, the ERC is now returning to a standard calendar of calls under the 2023 Work Programme. The Programme is pending approval but we include the tentative dates below for your information.

Call Calendar 2022/23 (tentative dates):

1. Starting Grant: 

  • Researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD (Extensions are possible under certain circumstances — see the latest ERC Work Programme), a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal
  • Applications can be made in any field of research
  • Duration: 5 year
  • Funding: 1.5 million
  • Deadline: October 25, 2022

2. Synergy Grant:

  • Research questions that cannot be dealt with by a single PI and require a small team of 2-4 PIs. Proposals must have an outstanding intrinsic synergetic effect.
  • Applications can be made in any field of research
  • Duration: 6 year
  • Funding: 10 million
  • Deadline: November 8, 2022

3. Consolidator Grant:

  • Researchers of any nationality with 7-12 years of experience since completion of PhD (Extensions are possible under certain circumstances — see the latest ERC Work Programme), a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal.
  • Applications can be made in any field of research
  • Duration: 5 year
  • Funding: 2 million
  • Deadline: February 2, 2023

4. Advanced Grant:

  • Applicants for the ERC Advanced Grants – called Principal Investigators (PI) – are expected to be active researchers who have a track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years.
  • The Principal Investigators should be exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research contributions. No specific eligibility criteria with respect to the academic requirements are foreseen.
  • Applications can be made in any field of research
  • Duration: 5 year
  • Funding: 2.5 million
  • Deadline: May 23, 2023
