Prospective, multicenter study of the immune response to Plasmodium infection in different population groups residing in Spain

Objectives

  1. To find out the prevalence of asymptomatic carriers in Spain.
  2. To study all the molecular tools that we have to be able to diagnose them correctly.
  3. To find immunological markers that can predict the clinical course and response to treatment in different groups of the infected population.

Rationale and Abstract

The eradication of malaria is still far from being achieved. Asymptomatic carriers of this infection represent an important reservoir of the disease, which is why they have become an important aspect of research in recent years. The objectives of this project are to find out the prevalence of these carriers in Spain, to study all the molecular tools that we have to be able to diagnose them correctly and to find immunological markers that can predict the clinical course and response to treatment in different groups of the infected population. This is a multicenter study with several beneficiary centers that will include all immigrant patients from malaria-endemic areas who come to the hospital with or without symptoms suggestive of malaria. All will undergo a microbiological study against Plasmodium (antigen detection, microscopy and PCR) and will be classified into different groups based on the result and their symptoms. A wide variety of humoral markers will be studied in the different groups and will be compared looking for patterns and statistically significant differences.
