Plasmodium falciparum mechanisms for erythrocyte invasion
Objectives
The main goals of the project are investigating variation in erythrocyte invasion mechanisms used by clinical isolates of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.
Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Ghana
Plasmodium falciparum uses multiple redundant pathways for invading human red cells, and deploys invasion ligands strategically to evade host immune responses. Therefore, a better understanding of these mechanisms is crucial for identifying targets for a potential blood-stage vaccine for malaria.
