SMC Third party funding/ Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) programme

Objectives

Since 2018, Malaria Consortium has continued to implement SMC in Burkina Faso, Chad and Nigeria, mainly using philanthropic funding. In 2019, our SMC programme aims to reach six million children through the efforts of 76,000 individuals. In addition to providing SMC to eligible children, the programme:

  • works with governments and implementers to develop, harmonise and revise high-quality SMC tools and materials, such as training manuals and job aids
  • supports health authorities and communities in planning for, coordinating and implementing SMC delivery
  • monitors and evaluates programme implementation
  • conducts research to contribute to the evidence base
  • liaises with international, regional and country-level networks to ensure that SMC remains a priority intervention continues to explore opportunities to expand the programme and close the coverage gap.
Principal Institution

Malaria Consortium, United Kingdom

Rationale and Abstract

Malaria Consortium has been a leading implementer of SMC since WHO issued its recommendation to scale up the intervention in 2012. Starting with an early implementation pilot in Nigeria in 2013, we then led the rapid scale-up of SMC through the Achieving Catalytic Expansion of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention in the Sahel (ACCESS-SMC) project in 2015–2017, reaching close to seven million children in Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and The Gambia.
