R&D for healthy futures: Five experts pick their top malaria paper from today

As Margaret Chan wrote in the World Malaria Report last year, "Each year, more people are being reached with core malaria interventions, and as a result, more lives are being saved".1 The progress has been phenomenal, however, our core interventions are threatened by emerging drug and insecticide resistance. Maintaining investment in R&D is essential to counter this threat and continue to drive down malaria deaths and infection.

Guidance on temporary malaria control measures in Ebola-affected countries

Malaria is a prevalent cause of febrile illnesses in areas with high transmission, and its clinical presentation overlaps with initial signs of Ebola disease. For this reason, the effectiveness of the Ebola response in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone can be optimized through the deployment of targeted measures to reduce the number of fever cases due to malaria.

MESA opens call for proposals

The MESA grants will support operational research on preventing the spread, or reintroduction, of malaria transmission between neighboring areas, or from hotspots/pockets of transmission.

Proposals must address innovative approaches to reach zero malaria transmission, or to prevent the reintroduction of malaria, in a specific zone which has neighboring areas where transmission still occurs; e.g. within district, at subnational level, between island and mainland, or at cross-border areas.

WHO/PAHO honours malaria champions in the Americas

On 6 November 2013, WHO/ PAHO honoured initiatives from three malaria-endemic countries with the 'Malaria Champions of the Americas Awards'. The Malaria Champions of the Americas awards were given to Colombia (Colombia Malaria Project), the Dominican Republic (National Center for Control of Tropical Diseases), and Brazil (Secretariat of Health of the State of Acre). The Malaria Champions of the Americas was launched in 2008 to identify, celebrate and inspire excellence in efforts to fight the disease.
