MESA operational research grants start activities

New operational research projects in malaria elimination will start this April, after being selected for funding through MESA. The MESA operational research portfolio includes: proof-of-concept of novel vector control and diagnostic tools, use of mapping technologies for surveillance and tailored response, and mobile phone applications for hard to reach populations. Urban, rural and forest settings are addressed.

Malaria Policy Advisory Committee to the WHO: conclusions and recommendations of the September 2013 meeting

The Malaria Policy Advisory Committee to the World Health Organization held its fourth meeting in Geneva, Switzerland from 11 to 13 September, 2013. This article provides a summary of the discussions, conclusions and recommendations from that meeting. MESA is partnering with Global Malaria Programme to disseminate the report.

Towards malaria elimination: innovative tools for malaria surveillance in Cambodia

The Malaria Consortium has published 'Moving towards malaria elimination: developing innovative tools for malaria surveillance in Cambodia' as part of their 'Learning Paper' series.

The paper describes the collaborative, systems approach to real-time malaria data for direct action. Including village malaria workers, a malaria information system, and referrals. See page 20 & 21 for challenges and 12 lessons learned.

WHO/PAHO honours malaria champions in the Americas

On 6 November 2013, WHO/ PAHO honoured initiatives from three malaria-endemic countries with the 'Malaria Champions of the Americas Awards'. The Malaria Champions of the Americas awards were given to Colombia (Colombia Malaria Project), the Dominican Republic (National Center for Control of Tropical Diseases), and Brazil (Secretariat of Health of the State of Acre). The Malaria Champions of the Americas was launched in 2008 to identify, celebrate and inspire excellence in efforts to fight the disease.

MESA opens call for proposals

The MESA grants will support operational research on preventing the spread, or reintroduction, of malaria transmission between neighboring areas, or from hotspots/pockets of transmission.

Proposals must address innovative approaches to reach zero malaria transmission, or to prevent the reintroduction of malaria, in a specific zone which has neighboring areas where transmission still occurs; e.g. within district, at subnational level, between island and mainland, or at cross-border areas.

Malaria Eradication Scientific Alliance

MESA (the Malaria Eradication Scientific Alliance) follows-up on the malERA agenda and provides a dedicated platform for the community in order to accelerate the translation of the science of malaria eradication for impact.

With the community, MESA monitors progress and takes the next steps to advance the science of malaria eradication. MESA reviews existing evidence and supports projects on research questions critical to malaria eradication.

Workshops to write grant proposals

The BOVA Network has opened a call to facilitate grant writing workshops.  Up to six workshops will be funded. The closing date for applications is Friday 16th August 2019, applicants will be informed of the decision by mid-September 2019.
